SUMMARY:AGU Fall Meeting - Wind Energy Session
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDecember 9-13\, 2024 in Washington\, D.C.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSession Detail: https://agu.confex.com/agu/agu24/prelim.cgi/Session/230053\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nThe deadline for all submissions is July 31\, 2024 at 23:59 EDT.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nA013 – Observational and Modeling Studies for Improved Wind Energy Characterization & Forecasting\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAbstract: Installations of offshore and land-based wind farms are projected to increase in the coming years as the economy transitions towards renewable energy. Accurately forecasting rotor-region winds is crucial for this transition. Despite significant progress\, models struggle to accurately simulate rotor-region winds due to various reasons. These factors include surface characterization (including wind-wave-ocean coupling or soil moisture)\, atmospheric boundary-layer turbulence\, changing stability conditions\, clouds\, precipitation\, extreme weather\, and wind turbine wake effects. This session will focus on characterizing and reducing uncertainties in rotor-region wind forecasts through observations\, model simulations and AI-based techniques. We especially welcome observational studies stemming from targeted large field campaigns (e.g. WFIP3\, AWAKEN\, X-WAKES\, WIPAFF etc.) or smaller experiments. Modeling studies focused on improving the understanding of processes modulating rotor-region winds\, or improving wind farm parameterizations for weather models are also welcome.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nConveners: Arka Mitra\, Anthony Kirincich\, David D Turner\, Julie K Lundquist\, Ulrike Egerer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Seminar - Geologic H2: A New Primary Energy Source for the Transition to Clean Energy?
DESCRIPTION:The Rutgers School of Engineering’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering invites you to join them for their upcoming seminar “Geologic H2: A New Primary Energy Source for the Transition to Clean Energy?” with special guest Dr. Douglas Wicks\, Program Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). \nThe seminar will be held on Tuesday\, September 17 at 12:00 to 1:20pm at the McLaren Center for Ceramic Research\, 607 Taylor Road\, Room 201\, Piscataway\, NJ 08854. \n \nDr. Douglas Wicks\nProgram Director\nAdvanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) \nAbstract\nHydrogen is viewed by many as a key component of the transition to clean carbon-free energy. The International Energy Agency forecasts that 520 million tons hydrogen from natural gas + carbon capture (so-called “Blue Hydrogen”) and the electrolysis of water (“Green Hydrogen”) will be needed by 2050 to attain climate targets. This represents a > 5-fold increase from current hydrogen production and use. Both routes have significant challenges – blue hydrogen will have fugitive methane releases and need to store gigatons of CO2\, green hydrogen requires large expenditures for renewable energy and critical minerals. \nMeanwhile\, beneath our feet\, the earth has been continuously generating hydrogen and for the most part mankind did not pay attention to what was right in front of us. This hydrogen is continuously formed by known chemical reactions in the subsurface\, sometimes accumulating into reservoirs\, sometimes being consumed by parasitic reactions and sometimes seeping into the atmosphere. The chemical potential to form hydrogen is huge\, theorized to be in the trillions of tons. Economically harnessing the chemical potential of the earth could be transformational to the US and global economies. \nBiography\nDr. Douglas Wicks currently serves as a Program Director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA‑E). His focus at ARPA-E is on waste-to-energy technologies. Dr. Wicks joins ARPA-E from Imerys\, a French industrial minerals production and processing company\, where he was most recently the Director of Transformational and External Innovation. At Imerys\, he developed an innovation network comprised of academic\, contract research organizations\, start-ups and strategic partners. Before joining Imerys\, Dr. Wicks worked in a variety of roles at several start-up companies focused on innovative materials. Dr. Wicks began his career at Bayer Corporation\, where he ultimately became Vice President of Research for the Coatings and Colorants division. Dr. Wicks earned a B.S. in Chemistry from North Dakota State University and a Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. \n  \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Srishti Kaul Narula at srishti.kaul@rutgers.edu
